Are you interested
in learning how to respond to an employee who is experiencing cardiac arrest? Would you like to have an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on-site to use in the event of sudden cardiac arrest? Then, the East Shoreline Chapter of the American Red Cross can assist you in scheduling training and purchasing AED units.

What is an AED?

AED stands for Automated External Defibrillator. An AED is a device that analyzes the heart’s rhythm and, if necessary, prompts the user to deliver a shock to the victim of sudden cardiac arrest. This shock, called defibrillation, helps the heart reestablish an effective rhythm of its own. AEDs are easy to use, reliable, easy to maintain, portable and durable.

Who in our company/organization would use the AED? Is it complicated to operate?

The American Red Cross can train all of your employees, only those interested or a targeted group of first responders to use an AED. In fact, it is easier to learn how to use an AED than to learn CPR.

What does AED training involve?

Designed especially for business and industry, the newest American Red Cross course, Workplace Training: Standard First Aid with AED Skills, focuses on training the lay rescuer in the workplace. This 6.5 hour course combines OSHA compliant Adult CPR & First Aid training with instruction in the use of an Automated External Defibrillator, the two skills needed to save the life of a sudden cardiac arrest victim or provide immediate care in emergency situations.

Does an AED increase my risk of liability?

In November of 1999, the Michigan legislature amended the Good Samaritan law to provide immunity for AED users and purchasers.

Does cardiac arrest really happen in the Workplace?

Yes – approximately 350,000 people die from cardiac arrest each year. Sudden cardiac arrest can strike anyone, male or female, young or old, at anytime, anywhere.
