Our

NEED

The potential exists in Arenac, Bay, Huron and Tuscola counties for many types of disasters and emergency situations to occur whether natural or technological. Flooding, high winds, tornados, snowstorms, ice storms, and wild fires all pose serious threats to the health and safety of residents. Additionally, major transportation incidents, hazardous material incidents, large fires or explosions and utility failures require unique responses depending upon the nature of the incident.

The Hazard Analysis 2001 report (most current release) conducted by the Michigan State Police Emergency Management division shows that the chapter’s jurisdiction is susceptible to serious transportation accidents, closed routes due to bad weather and technological disasters along highways, railways and waterways, as well as the risk of potential exposure to hazardous materials:

  • The chapter has major commerce highways, freight railroad lines and a commercial shipping port within its geographic area
  • There are 131 contaminated "Superfund" sites
  • 924 fires (house, structure, forest, grass, etc.) happen annually

With such a significant potential for disasters in our community, a strong, unified approach is necessary for public disaster preparedness education and outreach. Preparation and planning for the senior population is also a priority.
